When Meg first approached me about being a part of this series, I had seen her around on Instagram but I didn’t really know her. But I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Meg better both creatively and personally through this post. Meg has an interesting story coming into the creative industry; she also has an incredible eye for photography. And I love the different perspective of creativity that Meg brings to this series. Read on and get to know her better like I did. Welcome to the blog, Meg!
Tell me about yourself. I’m Meg. I’m an architect-turned-photographer based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City. I photograph couples in love and growing families, all while traveling the world. I’ve been to over 100 destinations since starting my photography business in 2008. I love coffee shops, mornings and a good book. I love life, and I love love.
What is one weird or interesting fact about you? I once charmed a cobra.
What do you do to express your creativity? I express my creativity through my images and blog. I love capturing emotion in my images. When I can make my clients cry when they see their photographs, my job is done.
How did you get started doing this? I went to school for architecture and loved it. After graduation I worked at a firm design retail stores (and still get a kick out of visiting some of the stores we built). When the recession hit, I was laid off. I enjoyed unemployment for a bit, but soon got a bit antsy. I started stationery, jewelry and knitting companies before settling into photography. I was always interested in photography; I was that girl who always had a camera in her purse. So I started editing for an established photographer and shooting weddings and portraits while I searched for an architecture job. It was a very natural progression. Over time the construction industry wasn’t improving, but my business was growing. Six years later my business is thriving and I couldn’t be happier.
What do you love most about what you do to be creative? I love that I get to be a part of people’s lives. I love that I can help them save their memories. It’s really such a blessing to be a part of such happy moments.
Who or what inspires you? Life and travel inspire me. Sometimes when I feel uninspired, I take a moment to soak in my surroundings and search with in myself. That moment of peace usually gets me going.
How do you stay inspired? What do you do when you feel stuck or uninspired? Creating a close community of creatives has really helped me get through those uninspired bouts. I also make a concerted effort to constantly learn. I take classes and read books in topics that interest me, which helps feed my inspiration.
Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to be creative? I do what I do because it is who I am. I am a creative, to not be creative would be to deny myself my natural inclinations.
Describe your creative style. I am fluid and emotional.
Name your top five favorite tools or products.
- My wacom tablet. Every designer/creative/photographer should have a tablet of some sort
- My collection of small black sketchbooks. I carry one wherever I go. I use it write out ideas, inspiration quotes, to do lists…etc.
- My iMac. Having a great desktop computer has really made me more productive.
- Fuji x100s. It’s the best camera for every day life. I love it.
- My ONA Bowery bag. It’s the perfect bag for traveling or going out in the city. It’s a beautiful camera bag that fits all my essentials perfectly.
Are you an early bird or a night owl? When are you most productive? I am a night owl, but I am most productive from sunrise to noon. It’s hard for me to get up, but I get more done in the mornings than if I stayed up all night.
What project(s) are you currently working on? I’m working on a bunch of weddings and portraits, but I have some styled wedding and editorial shoots in the works.
If you had to be a color in a crayon box, which color would you be? Blue-green
If you could possess a super power, which one would you choose? Teleportation, so I could travel wherever I wanted whenever I wanted.
